Unfortunately, the current challenging economic environment has resulted in such a significant decline in funding sources that Friends of the Arts (FOTA) has been unable to maintain funding at a level that sustains its core programs.  Consequently, FOTA has been compelled to wind down all of its operations as of January 2010.

Over the past several months, FOTA’s Board of Directors and staff have worked diligently to find an alternative course of action.  They explored a number of options designed to permit the economy to recover and enable FOTA to rebuild its concert sponsorships and financial strength, including shared fundraising events and pooling of resources with other arts organizations, and the potential assignment of the FOTA Pavilion to another presenting organization. Unfortunately, these efforts were unsuccessful and FOTA has been forced to dissolve.

Notwithstanding this sad turn of events, there are two positive developments to report: 1) FOTA’s ArtReach programs will live on under the management of the Great Neck Arts Center (GNAC). GNAC is expected to continue to advance FOTA’s innovative ArtReach programs and partnerships with school districts in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. For program and contact information, go to www.greatneckarts.org.  2) The popular Concerts at Coe Hall series of classical chamber music will continue under the auspices of the Planting Fields Foundation. For program and ticket information, go to www.plantingfields.org.

FOTA has enjoyed many accomplishments in its 37 years as one of the region’s most respected not-for-profit arts organizations.  Thousands of children have been introduced to the arts and been inspired through FOTA’s exceptional arts-in-education programs. Two generations of music fans were entertained by outstanding performances by the world’s finest artists in classical, jazz and popular music.

FOTA extends its deepest appreciation and heartfelt thanks to: its founders, current and past employees and FOTA’s Board of Directors (past and present) for their support, guidance and commitment; the enthusiastic staff and the invaluable corps of volunteers who made it all happen; and the many members, corporate and individual sponsors, foundation and government grantors for their vital contributions.  Special thanks to NYS Department of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation for allowing FOTA to present so many great concerts in the very special venue at Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park in Oyster Bay.  Finally, thank you to all of the patrons who attended and enjoyed FOTA’s concerts and events.

With regrets that FOTA will no longer be here to serve you, the Board of Directors and staff of FOTA wish all of you the best and hope you will continue to support the arts on Long Island.
